Dear Harry,
I endorse every word that has been expressed by Maxie, may I just add but for the blog and the hard work(brainy) put in by our dear Maxie things would have never moved at the right pace, and from time time little nudge and goading made it such a great success.
Harry was at times getting a wee bit nervous, whenever I spoke to him, assured that alll will pull their socks a couple of inches higher and  make the reunion a great success.
Harry,Maxie please could we have a list of all our classmates who made it.
Once again Harry and the committee deserve a pat on your backs, for a job very well done.
Love to all
Arun
P.S. It is 14.15 hrs. Friday and my son, Avi should be here to pick me up to take me home within the hour.

Thank you....

Dear Harry,
Hope you got the text message I sent you while on my way to the mountains/ghats via sms on my mobile. I have just returned/arrived in town (M'lore) once again, to catch the night train to Bangalore from the M'lore Jn. tonight. I am availing of this opportunity to try and shoot off a short email - the promised one, in the short interlude between now and boarding my train a short while later in the evening.
Now that our scheduled 'reunion' and its associated agenda/functions are over, this is my small thank you note to those few of you who slogged hard to make the reunion happen. Though some may have contributed substantially, but for Arun, Walty and your initiative and Herculean thrust, the reunion would never have materialized. I personally know your contribution has been substantial, so thanks are due to you mostly.
The whole batch owes you our big thanks and gratitude for making this reunion happen and for meticulously planning the itinerary and seeing it through flawlessly. Every event in the itinerary went through perfectly and most enjoyably.
Unfortunately, because of constant movement since the 21st and lack of internet connectivity on the estates, I haven't really been able to do justice to the Blog, or even upload the photographs effectively for the benefit of all. This may have disappointed many - and some have already written to me about it, Hopefully I should be able to satisfy all at the earliest - maybe even before I return to Delhi/Gurgaon on July-07. I still have miles to travel, towns to visit - Bangalore, Chennai, Pondicherry - and lots of work to attend to, before reaching home - my final destination after this particular trip.
So Harry, thanks a ton once again. It was lovely meeting all the classmates who made it to the reunion - it would have been wonderful if Cherry was present too with her charm to lend grace and colour to our gatherings.. Do tell her we missed her
Will be in touch..... Take care,
With warm regards
Maxie

God be with you for a speedy recovery....

Dear  Arun,

Just managed to access the internet, while up in the ghats where connectivity is almost nil. Today we are on our way from Gabgal to Sakleshpur, where my property is and I carried the laptop with the net card so have been able to access my mail while passing through Mudigere.

The Lord be praised, I am SO happy to know that the operation is a success and you're back in your room already. Please take care and don't be in a hurry to go home without ensuring proper after care and complete recovery.

Just wanted to shoot of these three lines before losing connectivity. I will try and pen you more later with the details of the agenda from where I left in my last.

My wishes to Chand and the boys. Take care.

Maxie

Dear Maxi & all my Dear Friends,
Enjoyed seeing the pics. I went to the theatre on Monday,21st as scheduled at 8am and was out at 12 noon. Chand and my 2 boys and my nephew Rahul(jayvanth Suvarna's son,ex aloysian) were with me. The operation was a success. The surgeon was mr o'keefe and he was very satisfied with the results. Normally they keep you in the icu for 36 hrs whereas I have been lucky to be back in the ward in my own bed in less than 24 hrs. I had a good nap this afternoon and seen all the photographs and I'm eagerly awaiting reports of the second part of the proceedings.

Did you raise 50000 rupees, was it a grand gesture from Norman. Please try to collect photographs from all our friends and email it to me. When are you planning to return to your bases? Did Bopiah make it in the end? Glad to know that Trilochan made it. I'm hoping to be discharged by Friday or Saturday.

Keep in touch, love to all.

Re: Emailing: 1/2

Dear Peter,
Have accessed your email ,midst my travels in either nil, or poor internet connectivity areas.
You have sent me just one picture from your camera, and not really all the pictures of our reunion clicked by your camera.
As mentioned, because of my constant movement in and camping in areas (coffee estates) without internet connectivity, have not been able to do justice to our Blog... or upload any pictures on to the Blog as yet. I believe I will be able to do that only after I reach Bangalore on the 27th.
With regards,

Our Golden Reunion

-
From: Peter Fernandes to Arun
Date: 21 June 2010 19:08

Dear Arun,

Hope you are out of the surgery and are now on the recovery bed. Our prayers and best wishes are with you.

I am pretty sure you have received by this time all the updates with the pics of our Golden Reunion Programme just ended. Nevertheless, I felt I should apprise you with my viewpoint too.

In fact, I arrived in Mangalore on the eve of our big day. The same day evening I went to meet some of our classmates staying at Fatima Retreat House as informed by Harry. I was too happy to do so but had to return home by 8 pm as promised to my Mom.

On the 19th I was the first one to arrive at the middle school premises where I met Subrayya and then Maxie after 50 long years. When some of the rest reached over there my joy knew no bounds. But particularly I had to ask one classmate "May I know you?" and he answers in his inimitable style "I am Terence now settled in Canada". Mind you, this is the very Terence with whom I used to go to school from Bejai all those years! Then I said to myself "Peter, look no further for a more grave embarassing moment in your life!!!"

The whole programme went on as scheduled. The weather Gods though mostly favourable, we could not enjoy much at the Someshwara beach due to drizzles. The programmes like Mock class, Self-introduction and narrating most embarassing moments in one's life though proposed and supported over the internet did not take place. May be it could have been possible with an eye on time and with a watchful compere or coordinator.

The next day after the Mass and breakfast in the morning, I had to return home to catch the vlovo bus in the noon to Mumbai due to a personal commitment.

We missed you a lot throughout the entire Programme. By the way, while thanking Victor and his wife Rosy for the lovely dinner at their place on the first day, I wished our Reunion turn from Gold to a Diamond one.

Cheers,

Peter

God be with you for a speedy recovery....

Dear Arun,
A scribble just before leaving from Gurgaon to Hazarat Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi to catch the Mangala-Lakshadeep Express and embark on our Mangalore bound journey for the Reunion.
With a prayer on our lips, this is to wish you good luck with your surgery - if it finally materialises on the 17th. I am sure you are in good hands, the doctors attending on you ensuring you get the best of procedures and care-filled attention. And with Chand and your sons beside you, I wish you a successful procedure, a speedy recovery, and a 100% rejuvenation...
Yes, I will endeavour to keep you posted with the happennings at the Reunion. We will miss you.
With love and regards,
Maxie

Raphael in Delhi during his Bharat Darshan!

Hello folks..
I believe the news of Raphael's Bharat Darshan was already posted here. "I want to travel through India and feel the current pulse of the people", is what he told me was his purpose.
Raphael arrived in the Capital city of Delhi on Jun-11 and left for Mumbai by train on Sunday, yesterday. It was nice having him around at my place in Gurgaon to spend some nice quality time together with me and my daughter who is currently visiting me from California.
For those of you in Mumbai and also Terrence Mathias according to whose original itinerary he should also be in Mumbai by now, Raphael has a cell phone number: which you may access, if any of you is inclined to touch base with him in Mumbai before he takes off to Mangalore on the 17th for the Reunion.
Accompanying this mail are a few snapshots of Raphael's Delhi visit. For the benefit of tose who do not know Delhi, I have taken the liberty of also posting pictures of some of Delhi's highlights - in addition to those seen/visited by Raphael.
I am arriving in Mangalore with my daughter on the 17th. Looking forward to meeting the rest of you at the Reunion. Those of you who cannot make it this time, will miss you guys! But we'll keep you posted with the developments and the highlights.
In anticipation of our Reunion,
Maxie

Thanks are due to Avinash from all of us for his father's day gift to you, which has enabled you to be the first to respond to the "final programme" mail sent jointly by Hector, Harry & Walter. With this iPad beside you, I am confident you will not be missing out on any of the details during the reunion get-togethers.

Sincere thanks also to Hector, Harry and Walter for having so clearly enumerated the final programme, and lucidly communicated the same in Walter's email.

And thanks so much Victor and Rose for so generously hosting the Reunion dinner on the 20th. I remember the lovely meals I've enjoyed at your table Rose, in the late 60s - and my mouth has already started watering. (Since Victor's email is not functional, I will be grateful if anyone from the core committee reads this paragraph to the 'Currie's over the phone).

Prabhakar Bhat's suggestion to collect the subscrption decided by the local committee, when we all meet for the photo session is sound and convenient (I suppose one can expect maximum attendance at the group photo session).

CU soon.

I am so thrilled that in addition Mr Kairanna, we'll be having Fr Walter Albuquerque as well, and Achchu mistry - Mr Alexander D'Souza.

Really looking forward to meeting the gang on the 19th...

In eager anticipation,

Arun from his hospital bed on "Self intro"

Tuesday: 8 June 2010 11:56

Dear maxi and friends
Good morning it is 7.10 am and I am back on my toy.
Great idea Peter, and I remember Maxie suggesting the same in November, the intro should be
short and sweet and no mention of the bank balance or about the time spent at Bijai jail please !!
Once we have the photographs at the reunion we can start building our family album.Please. Seeif you can have a DVD of the two days for the people like me who have missed out and show to our friends and family.
Raphael, you and your better half are travelIng the length and breadth of India, enjoy yourselves.Terence must be in India too, looking forward to seeing him here in Cardiff in August.
Haven,t heard from Rex for awhile, love to hear from you.

I am bored here in the Hospital and no sign about the date for my op please keep writing to me and keep me sane .

Love

Arun

Peter's suggestion for Self-introduction...

An excellent suggestion from Peter.... (see at the bottom of this post)

I had given this suggestion right in the beginning, and requested all for a short biographical paragragh on themselves for the Blog. To make it easy for each, I even wrote a few lines about every classmate - living or deceased - as I remembered him; and circulated the same while also posting the lines by specifically allocating individual frames for each on the Blog.
I recall Leo responding later saying not everyone would be comfortable sharing with others his story for the intervening fifty years. I respected Leo's view point and did not press the matter further.

Even so, Fr Cyril Veliath was the only one who obliged with his story - also backed up by pictures; and I posted his brief account promptly on the Blog for everyone's benefit.

Raphael too sent some pictures, and bits and pieces of his story surfaced in correspondence he had with individual classmates.

Leo's innovative initiative then followed - to send current photographs clicked during mutual visits to each other so that others could get to see how time had weathered each or not. Leo's pictures of Hector and his visit to Sigismund and Redmond at Palya/Saklespur were absolutely stupendous!

My own visits to the Maliakals' in Boston/USA and the Talwars' in Cardiff/UK and the Saldanhas' in Mangalore brought their respective living rooms alive into our Reunion domain.

Taking cue from Leo's pointer, it is possible some of us may cherish fears of not having achieved in the eyes of the world - as much perhaps as some others among us have. But for all we know, such may be the very ones who have been blessed by the Lord many times more - and in ways others can really fathom - than the so called material achievers of this world.

In this context I want to quote my eldest brother-in-law who told me even when still very young, that "The sum total of an individual happiness vis a vis that of another, is constant". Not many realize this.

So it would really be wonderful to have everyone participate in this "SAC class of 1960" family exercise - without prejudice, discrimination, competition, diffidence... or feelings of better or worse, great or small...

The Blog and the space reserved for each of you therein is still waiting - whenever you are ready.... !

Maxie

Since you have welcomed suggestions, I would like give one from my side. Only a few of us have introduced ourselves for what we had done and are as of today. Narration for the 50 years' gap since we bade farewell to each other and successive achievements to this day need definitely be given a chance for a general audition in order to know each other better. Since the number atttending would be around 27, I feel maximum 5 minutes be allotted and the rendering left as purely optional. The time slot for this audition could either be before the Group Photo or after Tea break or even before Dinner on the 1st day.

Replying on behalf of Arun, (although, now he can do the needful himself, curtsy of our son`s father`s day present, an iPad!)
Yes Arun is still in the hospital, awaiting his op.( They have decided on a bypass).

He had a great time on his birthday, in the ward, with all the new friends he has made. Its like boarding school, they plan all sorts of mischief and are having late night feasts!!   Now with his new toy they are singing along with all the old tunes like Cliff Richards` Bachelor boy!!  Today the operating theater has opened again and they have started with the ops. So hopefully he will be home in a couple of weeks time.

Regards to both you and Phil.

A unique bank account

A UNIQUE BANK ACCOUNT

Imagine that you had won the following prize in a contest:

Each morning your bank would deposit $ 86,400.00 in your private account for your use.

However, this prize had rules, just as any game has certain rules.

The first set of rules would be:

1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you.
2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.
3. You may only spend it.

Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400.00 for that day.

The second set of rules:

1. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, "It's over, the game is over!"
2. It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted, right?
Not only for yourself, but for all people you love, right?
Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right?
You would try to spend every cent, and use it all, right?

ACTUALLY, THIS GAME IS REALITY!!

Each of us is in possession of such a "magical" bank.

We just can't seem to see it.

THE MAGICAL BANK IS TIME!

Each awakening morning we receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life.
When we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us.

What we haven't lived up that day is forever lost. Yesterday is forever gone.

Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time ...

WITHOUT WARNING.

WELL, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds?

Aren't they worth so much more than the same amount in dollars?

Think about that, and always think of this:

Enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.

So take care of yourself, and enjoy life! Use time wisely for yourself, loved ones & others

when do u celebrate your birthday?

Friends,
Could each of you please send me your individual date of birth? ....please?
I can carry the information on our class Blog - so those who want to remember and wish can do so conveniently? Thanks....
It was unfortunate that many of us could wish Arun only today after seeing Prabhakar's belated wishes mail, and not yesterday when it was indeed his birthday. Maybe a barrage if wishes yesterday would have been a tremendous morale booster for Arun, which may have worked a wee bit also towards his speedy recovery?!!!
Thanks a ton for your cooperation.
Maxie

Happy Birthday: 03 Jun 2010

Hey Arun,
Just saw from Prabhakar's email that yesterday was your birthday...
A belated happy birthday, and many happier returns of the Jun 3rd.
Whatever be the vagaries and ups and downs of life, all of us have reasons to believe that the Almighty has specially blessed each of us.
My prayer for you on this birthday is, that He blesses you even more now than He has before - mainly with good health (better than you've perhaps enjoyed before); more wealth; and lots and lots of happiness with fun and laughter in the company of your loved ones and friends.
Hope you are out of hospital - what happened to the decision the doctors were to take on whether to treat you with a stent, or to go in for a by-pass?
Whatever....... wishing you a speedy recovery, and all the very best in life..
Yours as always,
Maxie

Dr.Devi Shetty on heart care...

.....received from Peter Fernandes - Mumbai... on 01 June 2010

A chat with Dr.Devi Shetty (Heart Specialist), Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore was arranged by WIPRO for its employees .
The transcript of the chat is given below. Useful for everyone.

Qn: What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?
Ans:
1. Diet - Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise - Half an hour's walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?
Ans: No

Qn: It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person
gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?
Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?
Ans: Yes

Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?
Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?
Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints

Qn: You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?
Ans: Mother Theresa , who was my patient

Qn: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?
Ans: Extremely rare

Qn: Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age (I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?
Ans: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Qn: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart ?
Ans: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

Qn: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?
Ans: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Qn: Can yoga prevent heart ailments?
Ans: Yoga helps.

Qn: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?
Ans:   Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil.

Qn: Which oil is better - groundnut, sunflower, olive?
Ans: All oils are bad   .

Qn: What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?
Ans: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

Qn: What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?
Ans: Help the person into a sleeping position   , place   an aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.

Qn: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?
Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.

Qn: What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.
Ans: Increased awareness has increased incidents.. Also, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.

Qn: Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?
Ans: Yes.

Qn: Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?
Ans : Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child

Qn: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?
Ans : When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.

Qn: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?
Ans : Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti- hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Qn: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?
Ans : No.

Qn: Are asthma patients more prone to heart disease?
Ans : No.

Qn: How would you define junk food?
Ans : Fried food like Kentucky , McDonalds , samosas, and even masala dosas..

Qn: You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason for this, as Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food?
Ans: Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.

Qn: Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?
Ans : No.

Qn: Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)?
Ans : Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.

Qn: Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?
Ans : No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.

Qn: Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?
Ans : Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.

Qn: Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?
Ans: Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.

Qn: What are the things one needs to take care of after a heart operation?
Ans : Diet, exercise, drugs on time   ,   Control cholesterol, BP, weight.

Qn: Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?
Ans : No.

Qn: What are the modern anti- hypertensive drugs?
Ans : There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to
reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.

Qn: Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?
Ans : No.

Qn: Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?
Ans : Nature protects women till the age of 45.

Qn: How can one keep the heart in a good condition?
Ans : Eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, exercise everyday, do not smoke and, go for health checkups if you are past the age of 30   (once in six months recommended)   ..
