Beef Meat masala

Dear Leo,
About the Kerala meat-masala...
Even though Raphael's wife Tessy so graciously explained to me the process/method for cooking the special Keala beef dish, my memory being what it is I did not want to take chances - and like I am often inclined to do, looked up the internet just for back-up and found what appeared to be exactly the recipe I wanted. The dish was referred to as "ullartiyattu" - and had quite a few variations, so the only improvisation I resorted to was the use of yoghurt too to marinate the meat in along with the special masala powder, and grated coconut instead of the cut strips of coconut the Keralites use in this dish.
The attachment to this mail has the recipe that I used - only, instead of the raw ingredients, I used Tessy's meat-masala powder - the recipe for which I have also reproduced below the internet recipe in the attachment.
For the record, the dish I cooked with Tessy's powder which she had so kindly shared with me, was a great hit - my daughter and son-in-law could not have enough of it. So much so, I had to ask Tessy for the recipe for the powder, which my sister was able to help me prepare at her place in Fairfield - and now both my daughter and sister have sufficient stock of the powder. And Indira my daughter got me to cook it again with the new powder for her table plus for the tupperware in the freezer for times when I am gone back to my base. Needless to say, the recipe for the powder and the dish I cooked a second time have remained a hit - just to Raphael's fears that I may possibly have botched it.
Thanks are of course due only to Tessy...
Take care
Maxie

Maxie has the recipe for the masala. He also has instructions to make the beef curry in dried form. Maxie is experimenting with it in Trumbul CT. He will probably improve (or ruin) it in London next week. Once he has perfected it, he should send all details to you. If there are problems, then I will ask Tessy to send the original recipe and instructions.

Let us not get distracted by the masala for now. Let us focus on the reunion. I am looking forward to a friendly, fun get together.

I clearly remember you and Harry coming for a visit to Hind Motors. I tried to impress you by taking you around the plant. We used to make 100 cars and about 20 bedford trucks per day at that time.
Three years ago I went to calcutta and made a brief stop at Hind Motors.
I am looking forward to seeing you.

Sincerely
Raphael Maliakal

hi raphael
the last we met was at calcutta when harry came over, to collect an ambassador car.  i recall u showed us around the hm plants at uttarpara.  do u recall this?  i worked for union carbide back then.
so now u r in boston, do u like it?  i look fwd to seeing u at the reunion.  but the reason i am mailing u, is that maxie was raving about a meat masala recipe tessie gave him.  i was wondering if tessie wd share this with us.  i am a foodie and like to experiment.  we know little of kerala food.
can't believe it 50 yrs already.  how time flies!!   ....   leo

Maxwell asked me if Mangalore (Head Quarters) has finalized the dates for the reunion. I told him that the dates are final and I have already booked the tickets. I will be in Mangalore on 18, 19, and 20.
I am looking forward to HQ sending the program details. I am expecting Stany, Harry and Walter to lead this effort, since I am giving most of the credit to them for initiating this effort. Off course Arun and Maxwell have contributed heavily to the chatter.

Golden Re-union.

Hi Harry and Stany,
During my short visit early this month, it was indeed sheer delight to meet you both, Victor and Patrick, to note the changes down the years and hear a bit of experiences. By the way, I must admit that it was by your lift that I could complete these visits within the limited time. Thank you. By the way....
I am yet to meet Norman and Leslie here in Mumbai even after having a word with them over the phone!
Ever since your initial letter, the correspondence with Web-sites and Pics by Maxwell, Arun, Raphael to name only a few has been truly heart-warming.
Am just counting the period left for the D-Day.
Regards - Peter

Nice to hear from you Peter. I wonder if I will be able to recognize you after 50 years.
I was talking to a friend of mine here about our reunion. Then he told me that he had lot of fun going for a 40th college reunion.
They had a competition where they had to recognize their class mates as they came for the function. I don't know how we can do it. But it would be fun.
I am glad that you are prepping for the reunion my a mini meeting with HQ.

20100128: hamara bharat

Thanks Leo.... a good one!
Wonder of wonders! The four-legged one -- a deity no less -- turning chain-snatcher!
A dilemma indeed.... this four-legged deity devouring the other deity Laxmi's effects - including poor Girija's chain!
No indication I suppose how long this derriere watch is to continue? ...and what if the cow decides on never sucking out the chain from one of its food-recall reserve chambers to masticate fully?
I am surprised though, the wise guys among the picnickers haven't come up with more ideas! ...especially on treatment for and of the derriere contents!
Maxie

yesterday's toi-bengaluru had this piece:
chain snatcher sends village into tizzy
bagalkot: all eyes in bilagi are on a chain snatcher. this one is four-legged.
on friday girija, wife of the priest of rameshwar temple performed puja to goddess lakshmi.  she then garlanded the deity, put her chain round its neck, went to the neighbours to distribute prasada.
seizing the opportunity a stray cow ambled in, chewed on the garland. when girija returned the cow was swallowing the last of her chain.  she raised an alarm.
the village gathered, suggested she tether the cow in her compound.  the vet told the family to wait a few days and search the dung for the chain.  but to the dismay of the family the cow did not heed their prayers....the dung was there alright....but no chain.
now girija's house has turned into a picnic spot with villagers gathering daily, waiting for the cow to do the needful.  it is five days since the cow ate the chain.  the bullion dollar question: will the cow oblige?
the picture shows a forlorn girija sitting at her verandah, gazing expectantly the cow's derriere.

20100126: Fishy Mangalore.....

My brother-in-law just returned to the US after a "India-visit" and was regaling us on all the Mangalorean delicacies showered on him - among them, also a "shevto" curry. I of course, couldn't help ask him, "...why? ...did you attend some funeral?" -- for in my memory, a shevto-curry was a must at the meal served to the funeral attendees at the oratory (bhuzovn) for which the close family returned to the house after the burial.

That was naughty of me! But it also set my memory travel back in years remembering the times (not at funerals, but at our own dining table meals at home) when I fought with my brothers and sisters for the 'peri" - the fish-eggs fried, and the "ganntt" which particularly is peculiar to only the Shevto (...or the Mullet as it is called in English)!

Not too long ago, on one of my own visits to Mangalore and while savouring to my heart's content the fishy delicacies of Mangalore, nostalgia had struck - and I had shot off an article for the Times of India. The piece - "Fishy Mangalore" was picked up by the web portal http://www.mangalorean.com/ --- a link to which I just found while trying to browse through the internet for more info on "shevto-curry". I am sharing the web-link to the article in the hope may be you will like it.

Dear Maxie
We had to defer our spiritual evening in view of phil's health and our maid's bereavement.
To kill time, and my curiosity, i rode out to Hector's house on hennur rd, away from the bustle of the city. I had to see his garden sigi had told me of. meet the man himself.
They have a nice spread with a fresh rural air, Hector has a green thumb that sprouts wonders. he devotes time, effort and love to his gardening. I was sent home with homegrown alsandes, chow chow, and chikkoos.
Attached is a snap I clicked of of hector and elvira for our blog.
Cheers .........

June'09 issue: "m" magazine.....

Dear classmates,

I am venturing to share with you for this weekend's reading, an interview of mine that appeared last June in the elite glossy men's magazine called the "m"Magazine.

I am sure most of you may have missed it - for I do not really envisage too many of our generation into 'magazine' reading!

If you find it boring, do dump it - but those of you who take the trouble to read, please do not spare me with your critical comments, whatever....

With warm regards,
Maxie

20100117 Sunday: Leo to Arun - copied to Maxie, StanCoelho, Hector, Prabhakar & Harry

dear arun
nice to hear from u again.  was afraid u had forgotten me.
yes, it was good to meet sigi, hariette, daughter reena.  also prabhakar & fmly.  meeting after 50 yrs, reminscing.
about this editorial thing .....  i am not the organisational type.  just a fun loving joker.  always ready for a laugh.  i hv not changed much since school.  i'll be happy to assist in a souvenir.
but do we really need one?  we have a blog we contribute to.  we shd encourage larger inputs, as maxie said.  paper souvenirs are passe in today's world.
we cd take pics of our reunion, upload.  spice them with juicy comments. they will be there on the web, anytime for anyone to access.  will keep growing with inputs.  can we collect opinion on this, see what the general feeling is?
if we do decide in favor of paper, my humble opinion is that editing shd also be done at mangalore (am not trying to be evasive, or pass the buck,) as:
1) that's where all the action is/will be; it is the venue
2) it has the largest number of classmates
3) all infrastructure is closeby, a small city
4) it will be cheaper.  b'lore costs are skyhigh, costliest city in india!!
5) there is the skill & experience of walty andrade.  he was principal of st joseph college of commerce here, they hv a house mag.  even now he may be heading an institution, he will hv infrastructure at his fingertips.
since our reunion is months away, i'd also like to share a couple of general thoughts:
1) a few of our class may be not as financially fortunate as others, some retired.  for our reunion to attract maximum presence, it must be affordable to all.  we must consider outstation folks have to travel, incur accomodation costs,  plus renuion expenses.  this may be hard on some.
2) all of us are at least 65 yrs of age.  perforce, a few may not be as fit as others.  some will have dietary constraints.  an a la carte approach at food points will help here.  our exercise must not be a strain on the weaker of us.  so shall  we keep it simple, not too strenuous, within kodial?  this will help persuade some doubtfuls.
it is early days yet,  let us exchange thoughts, iron out
potential snags before we encounter them.  and  make it as much fun as poss, with least hassles.    our aim must be to get the best attendance.

20100117 Sunday: Leo to Maxie

dear maxie
joe & i joined sachs + boarding house, june 1953.  he in class III, me class V.   back then, u merely opened a gate, crossed the road, were home. i was homesick, envied u!
i stayed boarder right till 1960.  a full 7 years!!  joe shifted to st joseph indian h.s. bangalore, 1958.
sigi has a small estate in sardarnagar, a km from palya.  it is his own, reddy is some 10 km away, is what he told me.  he is still the same simple nice guy.  very innovative.
the bh photo i have, is of 1960, just before we left.  it has turned sepia with age, but still sharp and clear.  i need to get it scanned onto a flashdrive.  then i can mail it.
my father was a planter for bbtc.  boyhood in tea gardens of tamilnadu.  so i look fwd to visiting any plantation in the ghats.  pleasant memories, clean air.  and far from the maddening crowds.
have yourself a very nice weekend   .............   leo

20100116: Maxwell comes for a visit.

Raphael Maliakal to all....
16 January 2010
Maxi took time off to visit me for 24 hours. We had a great time and reminisced on old times.
In school we lined up on the "shortie" end with Walter, Subodh, Bopayya, Sudhir etc. during PT.
We remembered Kyranna and Majappa (karadi) getting us ready for the drill.
Regards
Raphael Maliakal

100116: between Leo & Maxie again.....

Dear Leo,
Enjoyed your last mail on Siggi. The nostalgic strain is touching...
Siggi used to have an estate just short of Hassan (...perhaps at Palya - the same one u've mentioned) on the M'lore-B'lore Highway, where I recall he used to try out water conservation schemes for his coffee plants with robust plantain tree trunks buried in parallel ditches dug between rows of coffee plants. He was a great experimentor never daunted or intimidated by failures, forever trying out something or the other.
I used to drop in on him at this small estate in a dry reportedly non coffee-growing area, but never had occasion to meet his wife as she was working in a bank in Hassan - the next main town. Later during my visits to my own small property in Saklespur when I tried to drop in and meet him, I was told he had he had closed down his enterprise and sold the place to join his wife transfered to and working in Bangalore. Wasn't aware our Sequeira brothers had started another (..or the same) enterprise at Palya again.
I wonder if Siggi had followed up also on his artistic hand (......perhaps he has?) - I remember he was a fantastic illustrator!
Thanks for providing me Siggi's contact tel.numbers; I must try and touch base with him once I am back in India.
I didn't think you and the Sequeira brothers were in the Boarding House longer than me! After my sister Marjorie (Bullu)'s wedding in April 1956, dad and mom shifted base to the estate in Saklespur, admitting my brother Manohar and me in the BH. So I was there in the BH for four years from 1956 to 1960 that covered all the High School years from IIIrd to the VIth Form. I was under the impression those were exactly the years in the BH for Joe and you, and for Reddy and Siggi. That the D'Cunhas & the Sequeiras were boarders since 1st-Form is a revelation to me.
'Will look forward to receiving the scanned copy of our BH photograph. Do you have copies of all the years, or only for the final year?
By the way, Raphael's already registered himself as a 'follower' on our classmates' Blog.
Warmly,
Maxie

leo cunha's response on 16 January 2010..... 17:57
dear maxie
sigi does not have a pc; nor plans to get one any time soon. hence, no email id. period. u'll hv to call him @ his mob: +91 9449248771. or his res: +91 8170 210366
i snail mailed him hard copies of our class photo/list. the nostalgia was too much for him. he called me a few times. then got on a bus, came straight here.
he (also reddy) & i shared a roof the longest time. both boarders since 1st form, ,just one year after me. we were more than classmates. i plan to go visit him, meet reddy, breathe some clean rural air, maybe end-feb. they live by palya (between hassan & sakleshpur.) btw, when exactly were u & manohar boarders?
i will mail u a copy of our b'ding house photo when i can get it scanned some place.
take care .........

201015: from Leo to Maxie & back to Leo & all.....

Dear Leo,

You are truly a man after my heart.... !!!!!

At last someone is endeavouring to put our blog to due and good use. Thank you.

You will find that the note you sent me along with the latest photograph depicting you with Prabhakar+Siggie and their wives has already been uploaded by me on to our Blog. Please encourage others similarly to send in material about themselves/ their interaction with others/ tidbits and anecdotes of our schooldays from the archives of personal memory... etc etc.

I have just returned to Trumbull/Connecticut after spending a delightful 24 hours with Raphael and his better-half Tessie in Boston/Norfolk - enjoying their hospitality for a night under their roof, and Tessie's tasty cooking... last night and this morning. Earlier Rafael and I walked around Boston to experience some historic and other sites, as also spend time at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. Later over a 'spirit'ed evening (in more ways than one...!) Raphael managed to get on line also the two boys in Canada - Ozzie Sequeira and Terrence Mathias on the phone - which added more pleasure and spice remembering and reminescing over the bygone school days.

Maybe a more detailed account will follow soon (.............insha-allahhh!) but I will indeed post a couple of sample pictures here before really flooding you guys with the avalanche of the entire album!

I believe I do not have Sijismond's email address. If you (or any of the others) has it, please share it with me.

For those who haven't saved the link to our Blog, I am once again providing it here, for you guys to click on: http://sacclassof1960.blogspot.com/

Warm and affectionate regards to all,
Maxie

60th Wedding Anniversary

Joe & Irene Gonsalves

Celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary
in Our Lady of Miracles Church, Milagres, Mangalore
on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.

One by one each year flew by,
Since you both said "I do"...
60 years of memories,
Shared by the two of you.
From big events and holidays
To simple daily pleasures,
Some tearful times along life's way,
Some joys that can't be measured...
One by one each year now gone,
But still they're yours forever...
Each and every memory,
Of sixty years together!
Happy Diamond Anniversary !

Best wishes from Family & Friends

Uncle Joe and aunt Irene,
Warm felicitations and congratulations
for this stupendous day -- a threshold in time
of 60years for matrimonial togetherness
that many aspire to reach but only the rare worthy ones
succeed before the Lord's final summons.
May He grant you both many more years together on this earth
to be for all a shining example of marital sanctity
and may He couple these years with commensurate health
to spend your days with no less vigour
to keep up with your varied crusades
for unity in the community and for the cause of our faith
as also
to fill your days with more joy and happiness
in the company of your near and the dear ones.
My congratulations no less to your worthy children
Cherry, Lorna and Franco and their families
to have been blessed so wonderfully to see this day...
God Bless, once again...
Yours as ever

Maxie

100107: interested in movies !!! ?

During my latest interactions with our Ozzie Sequeira, he alerted me to the existence of new content on Wikipedia of which I had no clue – “I read your name on wikipedia.org/wiki/konkani_people#history under the title notable mangalorean catholics”. Very gracious of him.

Earlier, I was aware of a couple of other sites that concerned me – but that was only because of some rather insignificant role I had, acting (post retirement from the police) in the Muppet show – the children’s educational serial on television “Gali Gali Sim Sim” Indian version of America’s most popular and longest surviving tele-serial “Sesame Street” – produced by Miditech of the ‘Alva Brothers’ in India in collaboration with Turner Brothers of America. Between 2006-07 they got me to act as Col. Pinto in the serial in over a hundred episodes of Gali Gali Sim Sim which is mainly a Muppet show with just five human characters.

The related Wikipages were:
i. Muppet Wiki page accessible at http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Maxwell_Pereira
ii. Wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell_Pereira
I was neither a hero, nor a great actor, and was quite intrigued to find that someone somewhere had created pages on me for the Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia!

The real purpose of the information posted above is not for self-agrandisement, but for what follows: In the itinerary for the REUNION listed by Arun, I remember the mention of Ozzie Sequeira as having acted in a Konkani movie and that we should perhaps get a screening of this movie for our viewing pleasure at the REUNION. What I didn’t know was that Ozzie had not just acted, but was indeed the first Mangalorean Catholic to be in the movies – the Hero of the first ever Konkani movie “Mog Ani Maipas”. I believe it was a very well made movie, but it did not do well at the hustings because of opposition from other quarters. Apparently it still remains the most popular film even after 32 years because of its songs. Ozzie informed me he is trying to make a DVD of it; we hope he does, since it would be great for us all to view it at the ReUnion.

Meanwhile you can see Ozzie and his wife and second son Kevin in their Konkani religious skit "Our Lady of Guadalupe” on YouTube -- as also their photos on www.macsounsar and on google by just typing his name – and looking for the Oswald Sequeira there distinguished as a stage actor.

090104: Creators of Happiness

Sharing with you one of the good ones I received in my New Year mail....

What could be the best to write about, to begin the New Year.
Of course, wishing everyone "Happy New Year" is a good to start, which words, I believe you must be fed up hearing from me and many more repeatedly...

But how is ‘something’ happy for you or to anyone – isn't it when the SOMETHING brings happiness for people who are close to us? ...those around us? ....especially the ones who are near and dear to us?

Perhaps this could be done by being Creators of Happiness to those who are close? ...those whom we love? As we begin this New Year lets pledge to be creators of happiness around us.

· For our Parents we are their only Children

· For our Children we are their only parent - Father or Mother

· For our Spouse we are their only Spouse - hopefully forever

· For our Siblings we are their only Siblings (Brother or Sister)

And there are those who in one way or the other who touch our hearts - Our Friends!

God gave us our relations - thank God He let us chose our Friends!

These are few of the CONSTANTS in our life – Our family!!!! ...and friends!!!

In this New Year we could resolve to give them the best -- more importantly the emotional support and not just material benefits.

· It’s in giving you receive and

· It’s in sharing that happiness multiplies and sorrow divides

Happy New Year once again, and Loads of Happiness for you to share with all. Join the band wagon of CREATORS of PEACE, JOY, and HOPE.

Smiles around, please...

100103: Happy 2010

Arun Talwar to all classmates

03 January 2010
Dear Classmates
Happy New Year to you all and the families. 2010 will be extra special year with our class reunion in June. Wish you all Health and Happiness for the coming decade.
Thank you Leo for sending your lovely family photograph, Phil and you look proud and very young with Nikhil and Priya.
I am not sending our recent photograph as I look like a 'Matharo' as compared to Leo !
I have attached our Wedding Photo 08/10/1972 Malawi and you can see the innocence written all over our faces and I have my horns well covered with the turban ! (don't ask about the tail!)
The look on our faces is the petrified expression just waiting to be sentenced (32 years and no chance of parole!)
Friends, shall we all send our wedding photograph (Cyril and Walty could send their ordination photograph).
The other reason for not sending our recent photograph, it will be fun to spot each other on the big day as we have changed so much over the years (no name tags please on the day)
I don't think I would have recognized Leo if I had bumped into him in the streets of Bangalore. Looking closely he still has the naughty /cheeky smile!
I have spoken to Harry recently and he has agreed that editing of the sovenier should be done by the Bangalore crowd - Leo, Rex, Prabhaker and Hector and with expertise from Maxie. Please say yes, and Harry can post my college souvenirs to you all (for ideas etc)
Also could we get a sponsor/s who could pay for the printing costs etc. 40 copies should suffice (as we can post copies to the ones who cannot make it on the day).
Harry tells me that the postal response has been rather slow, may I suggest that we request for a small deposit from each one so they are committed to attend.and help with the catering etc.
Looking forward to hearing from you all
love and best wishes
Arun

I wish you Generousity so you may share...
All good things that come to you.
I wish you Happiness and Joy...
And Blessings for the New Year.
I wish you the best of everything...
That you so well deserve.
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010 !!!
