Alexander's Last Words

Alexander, The Great's Last Words
Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence.

He now longed to reach home to see his mother's face and bid her his last adieu. But, he had to accept the fact that his sinking health would not permit him to reach his distant homeland. So, the mighty conqueror lay prostrate and pale, helplessly waiting to breathe his last.

He called his generals and said, "I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail." With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their king's last wishes.
"My first desire is that", said Alexander, "My physicians alone must" carry my coffin." After a pause, he continued, "Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury".
The king felt exhausted after saying this. He took a minute's rest and continued. "My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept dangling out of my coffin".

The people who had gathered there wondered at the king's strange wishes. But no one dared bring the question to their lips... Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. "O king, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?"
At this Alexander took a deep breath and said: "I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt.
Lessons to learn from last 3 wishes of King Alexander...
I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure anybody. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let not people take life for granted.
The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell People that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.
And about my third wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty handed into this world and empty handed I go out of this world".
With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last. . . .
Lessons to Learn
Remember, your good health is in your own hands, look after it.

Wealth is only meaningful if you can enjoy it, while you are still alive and kicking.

You name them - Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit. Imagine you're keeping all of these in the air.
You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.
But the other four Balls - Family, Health, Friends and Spirit - are made of glass.
If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered.

Don't just have career goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order. There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.
Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same is with life where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.
One thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. Life is not meant to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid cards with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? .................
It's ok, bunk a few classes, scoring low in couple of papers, goof up a few interviews, take leave from work, fall in love, little fights with your spouse. We are people, not programmed devices....Don't be serious, be sincere!
The Irony in America
Only in America ......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.
Only in America .....do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.
Only in America ......do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.
Only in America .......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.
Only in America ..........do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight..
Only in America .....do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.
EVER WONDER ...
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?
Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?
Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?
Why the man who invests all your money is called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?
You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

The Virtual Tour of the Vatican.

The most  incredible tour of the Vatican you can ever imagine!

When you get the time just browse through this one inch by inch and do not hesitate to give expression to your feelings of awe and wonder .....and let me as also all other of our classmates too know what you think of it.

I spent more than two hours on this, yet felt I haven't seen enough - perhaps mainly because I was trying to relate the visual here to what I saw in the real in person in the year 2000 when I took my children to Rome.

This is simply beautiful...awesome. For those who have been fortunate enough to have visited the Vatican, it is a chance to relive the memories.....for those whose journey is yet to be, enjoy.

WHEN INSIDE, THE OUT OF FOCUS PARTS WILL COME INTO FOCUS BY JUST WAITING FOR EVERYTHING TO LOAD PROPERLY.

This truly is spectacular. You can zoom in or out using the small box on the left hand side showing the plus & minus signs. You can also go up or down using the cursor. The floors and ceilings are awesome.  Enjoy.

Thanks for the pictures. I hope you had a good Easter. We have a little over a month for our reunion.
Court cases are always a lot of tension. But the great thing is we resolve the issues in a civilized manner.

Hi Maxie,
Nice that U R back in circulation. Read your mail on your recent escapades in Mangalore. I had also met Harry very recently. I wonder why that blighter gave U a lunch but took one from me with beer. I will make up for this from him next time I meet him at leisure.
Due to unavoidable family commitments, we two will be in Mangalore only on 19.06.10. We have to be in Mysore on 20th June morning positively. One day meeting with all should, at least, break the ice as they say. We can follow it up with emails. We will reach Mangalore on the morn of 19th Jun by train - reserved already.
When R U visiting the Bang gang? We could have a good get together!
Keep in touch. Rgds,
Prabhakar

Hey Harry,
The pleasure was entirely mine...
Not only catching up with you, but meeting Cherry too after so so many years (maybe I have not met her for thirty years or more). Look forward to meeting y'all again, on my next visit.
Need Cherry's email 'id'. Want to ask her about some kitchen and table stuff. I sampled the Mangalorean red boiled rice during meals in at least four different places during this M'lore visit. Enjoyed it everywhere, but found the quality of what Cherry served at the lunch on 7th April, the best. Wanted to know where does she buy her 'kozo' rice from. Want to carry a 5-Kg bag of that one when I return after my next visit!
With warm regards to both of you,
Maxie

Hi Maxie and friends,
Thank you for the lovely photographs with Harry and cherry, I visited their penthouse in October 2008. lovely place with great views of Mangalore.
Spoke to Harry on Sunday, things are moving well our great day, he is hoping to have a second meeting soon.
Ossie sent me an e-mail regarding Jude Thomas, that he has returned back to Dubai, let us hope we can contact him. If anyone of us have family or friends over in Dubai they might be able trace him - Mangalorean Association or Kerala association !
I am so glad we managed to trace Josie.
Sudhir Rao and Vasanth Kamath need to be traced soon. both used live in Kulshekar and Vasanth Kamath's dad was in the cashew business and their house was next to the Peirce Leslie cashew factory. Both being GSB, I am sure Trilochan should be able to help !! Trilochan please make note!!!
I have booked my tickets and will be in Mangalore on the 17th. evening and will leave Mangalore on the 21st. morning , all excited.
love to all

Hey Arun,
I have a couple of nieces and cousins in Dubai. Have enlisted their help to try track down Jude... Gist of what I wrote to them, reads like-------
"....Not sure whether or not I mentioned to u earlier, about my sslc school
leaving batch of 1960 meeting for a 50-yrs-after REUNION this June.
For which purpose we are desperately trying to track down all our erstwhile classmates across the world. One of them is Jude Thomas whose last known whereabouts have been tracked down to Dubai.
Now how does one go about locating Jude Thomas (most likely a Keralite - or a Kerala Anglo-Indian of around 65-67 years in age) - Dubai Kerala Assn? ,,,,Mangalorean Assn? ....Dubai Catholic/ Protestant Church? Any other ideas?
Jude Thomas my classmate was a sports person who in addition to his prowess in Athletics, captained the school hockey and football teams. Because of his popularity among seniors and school management, most of us his classmates only got to hero-worship him and not really befriend him as perhaps we should have. Not surprisingly, he just disappeared from our lives once we graduated from school - and now we have to find him for the REUNION of our batch.
So do spread the word around in your circles, and whoever else u
feel could help.. Thanks.."
Likewise Arun, I believe everyone among our classmates would also have their own Dubai contacts. If all made similar effort, perhaps finding Jude in Dubai shd not be too difficult...
With warm regards,
Maxie

Thanks for the lovely pictures. You look great. Could you please tell us the secret of your youth. You look like a kombo.

Hey Terrence,
Thanks a ton for your compliments...
How I wish I felt youthful too, like a kombo...!!!!!!!
Unfortunately time and tide they say waits for none! ....and I believe I am not younger than any of you - or at least most of you! All the whites in my hair do testify to that...
Coming back to the 'kombo' part of your comment, "mojea boglyanth kombi naa re, saiba!" .....may be this fact has something to do with it?
Looking forward to meeting you in June, Terrence...

My plan is to be in Mangalore on 18th. I fly back from Cochin on 23rd. So I will leave Mangalore on 21 evening. i have not worked the details.
Normally my visit to Mangalore is 24 hours. I stay at a guest room at my sister's convent (Mary Imacculate convent, Bondel) for a night. My sister Sr. Angeline will come to Dallas,TX for a visit tomorrow mainly to spend some time with my 90 year old mother. I will be going there on May 8th for three days to see her. I will finalize details of my stay in Mangalore at that time.
Harry has booked a room for me for two nights at the club.
As I told you Tessy will return to US on June 7th. So I will be alone. I hope to have a few meetings with as many class mates as pssible even before the official reunion. I do not know if their schedules will be flexible enough.
I will send you my sister's phone number in Mangalore later. I do not know if I will have a mobile.
Sincerley

Hey Raphael,
Thanks for the updates on your June programme.. and itinerary!
i) One clarification though.... if I recall, you also had plans to accompany your daughter on a Delhi visit in the second week of June - after Tessy returns to the States soon after your family engagements in Kerala. Have those Delhi plans been dropped?
ii) Thought I will bring another small matter to your notice too - I wondered who you were heralding in when I saw among the addressees you had listed for this message one Herald Saldanha..... !!! If it is our Harry you wanted to address, I believe his name is spelt "Harold" and not "Herald". If by any chance I have spoken out of turn and you are right in your spelling, my apologies to you in advance!
iii) While I intend spending all my time on 19th and 20th June with the "gang" at the REUNION venue, I am not sure I will spend the nights there, considering the sprinkling of relatives I still have left in Mangalore, and they expecting I do not ignore them or their existence whenever I am in Mangalore or manage to show my face in M'lore. Even so I will play it by ear and decide nearer the dates...
Do let me know about the Delhi visit...
With warm regards,
Maxie

20100412: Peter to Maxi... to Peter!

Hey Peter,
Good of you to write...
More snaps on the Blog, with a few nostalgic notes - posted last night itself, but not published right away.... since I fell asleep on the laptop even as I was keying in the accompanying write-ups. Resulting in too many spelling errors and other alignment problems. Finished the stuff this morning and published the post for all of you to see.
It's titled, "A bird's eye view, perhaps of what to expect and what not to.... !"
Thank you for your alert on Lourdes Judy Lobo - I had earlier commented repeatedly that the email is bouncing, finally got the correct version from Arun, but for some reason didn't get down to the physical task of making the correction on the "sac group mail" facility. I will ensure that now. Thanks again...
I believe you were the one who furnished both of Vasant's email addresses. I am constrained to keep both of them on record, till such time he indicates which of the two he prefers receiving his mail on.
Do give my regards to Vasant. Tell him, as the son of a police officer perhaps his destiny to be one should have been more likely, than mine own to end up as one! Well, that tells, one never knows what destiny holds for one or the other!
I am so beholden to Norman J Lobo who sent me a scanned image of my "First Holy Communion" group photo - what a treasure!
And I am dying to touch base with Leslie - why is he silent?
And what's up with Norman S. ? Where the hell is he?
And who else are there in Bombay with you? (...oops! its Mumbai now, isn't it? Tell the Sainiks to go eat crap!). But surely, please don't get into trouble...
Thanks for the support and best wishes for success on the litigation front. Hate every moment of it, passionately. But have to endure what's been Willed!
Cheers and best wishes to you and your family,
Maxie

Secondly, Lionel's email Id is repeated twice unless you meant it to be so. By the way, I am thinking of visiting him this Friday (Can't wait to see him until the D-Day!).
Sorry to note your mission was not fulfilled. Wish and pray for better results next time and in your favour.

A bird's eye view, perhaps of what to expect and what not to.... !

Attending the District Courts, gave me an opportunity to be in the vicinity of St. Aloysius... an opportunity not to be missed for the camera...

I believe our itinerary for the REUNION starts from (what used to be) the 'middle school' - whose Gate was then bang opposite my own house; which house, dad had named "Sukh Sagar".

Apparently the lower school, or the junior school and its (play) assembly ground is not what it used to be.. In its place stands now the St Aloysius' Technical Training Institute complex - as seen in the two pictures here
The next picture is of the 'romantic' road that started at the bottom of the St Aloysius School on the Karangalpady side and climbed in a gradual gradient up to the Western spur end of the Ediya Hill where stood the Mangalore District and the Lower Courts.

The five pictures (above two and three more below this write-up) are of the 2nd PUC College Block and the Loyola Hall, where the Boarding House and it's grounds used to be.

The first one just below, is the Sacred Heart Hostel where I stayed when I did my PUC in 1960-61.

Couldn't help click for the next picture, the mango beside the coconut tree - purely for nostalgic reasons. I used to be a tree climber, a talent put to good use in them days to deprive the priests' refectory and kitchen of their annual supply of tender mangoes or even ripe mangoes. And as luck had it, I was once nabbed red-handed when still on this tree when the Boarding House Director's car passed by, while returning from somewhere - in consequence, me having to kneel in punishment on the bench at the base of this tree from morn till evening for a full day for all the passer-by and the players on the grounds to see and jeer....

Another one with great memories - the footpath that linked the "middle-school" with the High School (from just above the middle school Headmaster's office, to the western Courts side end) of the St Aloysius' campus where the 'grotto' was. I believe that path has become quite a "lovers' lane" now!

The School management has done well to display this "Guide Map" of the school and college complex with all their different Blocks, Halls, Labs, Grounds, and Departments listed beautifully. This picture was clicked by me just below Our Lady's Grotto at the western end of the "no-throughfare" road that emerges out of St Aloysius into the Courts Complex.

The steps leading up to the grotto... With three views of the Grotto itself herebelow...

Most pictures of the St Aloysius' buildings, you will find, are clicked from the Chapel end. I have clicked these from the Grottto end - mainly because our own passing out VI-E classroom was beside this very ground seen in these two photographs; on which was also our school assembly held each morning. How can I forget Victor Currie as the School leader standing there beside the Ashoka three-lion Stambh, before we all dispersed to our respective classrooms for the days routine!

The St Aloysius' multi-purpose main Hall, where as children we had opportunity to see the best of films from the English Classics screened, attended many a school socials and functions - starting with the royal breakfast served to us toddlers after receiving our First Holy Communion; and as grown-up High School Seniors participated in elocution/ debates... and acted in theatre on its beautiful little stage!

The then so called "Red Building" beside and perpendicular to the Hall continues to sport red colour for its exterior even now - but houses St Aloysius Museum now... unlike the upstairs then used for the School Band (in which I played Brass instruments for seven long years); and the downstairs then for the School Printing Press, as also for all our Engineering Optionals practicals Workshops (for blacksmithy, carpentry, electrical wiring, fitting, and what have you... ! )

I found the hill-side behind the Grotto - through which the 'romantic' footpath connecting the middle and the senior sections traverses - has been converted by the St Aloysius Management into a Bi-diversity Park which they have named as Al-Vana. Very environment oriented, and impressive indeed!

20100411: M'lore visit and back....

Dear friends,
Just to let you know I am back in Delhi - with just a minimissal percentage of my Mangalore mission accomplished, and the remaining all put off to a future date!
But in between, I did manage to vist Harry Saldanha and spend a couple of delightful hours with him and his sweet wife Cherry at their penthouse appartment in Falnir's "Symphony" on Sturrock Road. Enjoyed their hospitality too and shared their table at lunch. For the record, I am posting here on this Blog a few pictures I clicked on the occasion.
Not sure whether the judge in the courtcase that summoned me to Mangalore was fighting shy to encounter me,; at least it appeared so to me, for the scheduled 'hearing' did not happen - the judge having taken off on a holiday, I was told, with his family. What does he care what impact his whims has on people's lives and (as in my case) on their finances!!!! Sixteen thousand bucks that cost me to fly down and back, just down the drain!
Consequently, despite all good intentions, I just could not rendezvous
with the rest of the classmates... Right out of the Court disappointment, I took off to the estates, from where to return only last night - just in time for my return flight to Delhi this morning....
With best wishes,
Maxie

Unexpectedly 'am in M'lore!

Hey guys...

Great news indeed, Jossy Rego now coming on board...
So in Bangalore we have four of you guys now - Leo, Jossy, Rex and prabhakar!
For all we know, maybe one or two more of the still untraced ones perhaps may ultimately pop up in Bangalore too...

And guys, I have some personal news too, which I have to sheepishly confess! I am writing this on the Blog.... from Mangalore too. Just arrived this morning, taking the new direct flight from Delhi. Fantastic flight, highly recommended. Touched down bang on time at 8.35am, and by 9am was out of the airport. Just down 200 meters out of the Bajpe airport gate, into Flora Villa in Kuntala kambla on the main road, our malgaden ancestral house named after my paternal grandmother Florina!

Had all good intentions during the day of getting in touch with Harry today, and maybe one or two others too - but my unannounced emergent trip had a purpose behind it... and I am still embroiled neck deep in the tasks that've brought me to Mangalore. And since I have to leave on Sunday morning to be back at Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla grounds the same afternoon for the IPL - and in the interregnum attend lawyers' offices, clear some court appearances as also rendezvous with couple of civil authorities too, in addition to a dashing trip for a day or two up to the Ghats and back - 'am still not sure I will be able to meet any of the classmates on this trip...

I will definitely try, any way...

Keeping my fingers crossed.....
Maxie

Happy Easter

It was wonderful to receive from dear Harry Saldanha, a basket full of photographs taken on the 18th, 19th & the 22nd of March, apparently when the core committee for the Re-union had opportunity to meet.
The photographs accompanied his Easter wishes sent to all..
Thank you Harry...

A Holy and Happy Easter to all...

Well..........
Easter wishes have trickled in slow but steadily....
It is Eater vigil tomorrow evening any way, and then Easter Sunday looming up the day after..
A time for all of us to wish each other and the families and loved ones a Holy and a Happy Easter. May the Blessings of the Risen Lord shower on us all...
I remember the time when as children we were intrigued when some of our parents may have been called up to have their feet washed by the celebrant priest (like Christ did) on Mondy Thursday (...we however eyed more the loaf of bread of course that was doled out to them);
......and we were marched off to Milagres Church on Good Friday to listen to the "ghadgado" Passion of Christ (...then said to have been the most effective rendition as compared to services at any other parish church in town);
....and the midnight mass of the Easter vigil of course was also a must (...one had to remember to carry candles with pre-conditioned protection for not getting your fingers scalded by the melting wax) etc etc.
And I remember the excitement when as little ones we were also introduced to large Easter eggs that our sister invariably sent us from Madras; -- which dad , and only dad, had the privilege to crack open and distribute the goodies from within its confines to all around the dining table after the festive Easter lunch... !!!!!!!!!
May be some of us still cherish the hot cross buns that we looked forward to on Good Friday; and I'm sure will not say no even now to... the sugar-crusted Easter eggs and the chocolate Easter bunnies - if someone were to present them to us... !!!!
With warm and Happy Easter to all..
Maxie

20100401: Between Lionel and Maxie!

This is not an April Fools' hoax.....
But in real....., I did hear from Lionel Vasant Kumar today... !
As we all know, thanks to Harry and Peter's efforts Lionel came on board just recently -- and after some preliminary interactions he had with the core players in Mangalore, I was happy to get a one liner from Lionel on March-19:

Hi Maxie,
This is LIONEL. Do you remember me ? We used to sit on the same bench (2nd row with one Melville. So now you try to locate me in the group photo. (Clue : Shorty with specs.)
Regards,
Lionel

I was of course delighted, and lost no time in responding to him immediately:

Dear Lionel,
Of course I remember you...
In fact if you go back into the earlier postings on our blog when the class photograph indeed was first posted on the blog, in my very first email iwhile dentifying people whom I could remember, you were among those I could easily place and remember.
Also, if you go into the postings on the Blog for December last, you will find a specific post with my comments on each classmate as I remembered him - whether or not I could pointedly place them on the class photo!
You and I perhaps were among the shortest in the class, after "Chicky" Bonaventure Martis, Walter Andrade, Subodh Malli and Canute Machado - so we per force had to be either on the first bench or the second. The memory of which made Raphael funnily comment in his email to all after I visited him in Boston in January earlier this year, telling all that "....Maxie is not 'small' any more!"
Lovely to hear from you Lionel. Would love to hear from you more in detail - about you and your family, about what you did in the last 50 years since we left school - and whatever else about you that you want your classmates to know. Quite a few have already done it, and I have posted their life sketches already on the Blog. Would love to extend this courtesy to you and all others too, especially to those who have not so far shared with the rest a single word about themselves.
There is enough on the Blog about me - so I do not want to repeat and once again flood it with information on I, me and myself!
My warm regards to you and your family...
Maxie

It was then that I heard from Lionel again today....
It just happens to be April Fools/ Day, but then, more auspiciously, today is also Mondy Thursday in the Holy Week of Our Lord's Passion.
Let me share with y'all Lionel's latest communication:

Hi Maxie,
So sweet of you to to send such a long mail. Thanks to Peter!s list both of us are standing in the first row. But the problem was I could not recognise gawky profile of mine. So Maxie how are you ?
Here is a short list of my blunders. After PUC I joined KREC Surathkal. Came to Bombay worked for acouple of  years and started afirm with local partners to manufacture Electric Cranes & Hoists
in a small scale at Thane. I have three sons. First one an MBA settled in Bangalore with Magazine catering to Hospitality industry. Second one BE who I thought will join me but got attracted to IT world and migrated. Third one a Commerce graduate working with a Japanese bank. So I am left all alone looking for some one to take over. Rest when we meet.
Regards,
LIONEL
